Addiction Problems

Most addictions concern substances: alcohol, tobacco, coffee, marijuana, other drugs, which are the main concerns of addiction specialists.  However, there are other addictions (e.g., gambling, shopping, sex), and these providers should be contacted individually to see if they treat these cravings or dependencies as well.  Also check with those listed under more specific headings such as  Compulsions and Obsessions and Eating Disorders.

Aging Geriatric1

As we get older, our bodies don’t work as well as before, and we find ourselves visiting the doctor more often.  We may experience non-physical problems related to aging as well, such as  depression and loneliness, forgetfulness and confusion, unwanted dependency on others, and generally adjusting to our senior situation and capabilities.  See also Learning and Memory or Physical/Health if your problem fits only that issue.

Personality Disorder

This term refers to specific and  deep-seated ways of operating in the world that are maladaptive.  They come from early life experiences that “set” a distorted view of other people, ethics and values, or even one’s self-importance (or lack thereof), so that the individual acts in a way consistent with that distorted view (e.g., disregarding social conventions; being over-dependent ).  They’re ingrained patterns of thinking, so effective change will (usually) require a course of treatment with one of these specialists.

Trauma Recovery

This refers to the emotional damage of experienced severe  abuse or  trauma, whether as a child or adult, whether in a relationship or frightening event, and whether a  single incident or a continuing pattern of harm.  Often we “bury” the ravages of childhood trauma, unaware of how the event(s) continue to affect us as adults.  If this involves relationship abuse, call Advocates Building Peaceful Communities; if it concerns a child, contact your Department of Human Services (Steamboat Springs or Craig).

The issues related to employment are many and varied, and the providers listed here have honed skills especially applicable to workplace concerns.  This includes not only adjusting to a current job or career (including difficulty with co-worker(s) or a supervisor), but also career exploration and decision-making.  Supervisors may want to consider these providers first, when making an employee assistance referral (e.g., job performance problem, personal relations).
